The Iranian regime is attempting to dictate terms to FIFA and the hosts of the upcoming World Cup, demanding a laundry list of guarantees for its national team's participation.
Among the ten conditions presented by the Iranian Football Federation is an audacious demand that the United States and other host nations grant visas to all team members, coaches, and officials—including those who served in the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).
The IRGC is a designated terrorist organization in the United States and Canada, and for good reason. The regime’s demand comes after the federation’s president, Mehdi Taj, was rightfully denied entry to Canada for his ties to the group.
While Secretary of State Marco Rubio has indicated that legitimate athletes may be welcome, he has correctly maintained that individuals with ties to the IRGC will face the scrutiny they deserve.
Iran is also demanding special treatment regarding its national flag, anthem, and security protocols, while simultaneously attempting to muzzle the press by demanding journalists stick to 'technical football matters.' This is a transparent attempt to insulate a state-sponsored regime from the consequences of its own actions.
As the regime continues its pattern of regional aggression and political maneuvering, it expects the international community to ignore the reality of its terrorist affiliations in the name of sports.
FIFA is now caught in a self-inflicted bind, trying to balance the participation of a rogue state with the sovereign border and security requirements of the United States.
