A high-tech naval drone, believed to be a Ukrainian-made Magura vessel, was discovered by fishermen in a cave off the coast of Lefkada, Greece, with its engine still running and roughly 100kg of explosives on board.
The presence of this weapon—which experts estimate has a range of over 400 miles—has triggered a national security alert and forced Greek bomb disposal units to neutralize the threat in a controlled blast near Astakos.
While Ukraine has utilized such drones to target Russian assets in the Black Sea, the appearance of this craft in the Ionian Sea suggests a significant failure in maritime monitoring.
Reports indicate that handwritten notes in Ukrainian were found on the vessel, and investigators are currently weighing whether the drone was being transported or if it lost contact with its operator during a mission.
The incident has drawn sharp criticism from Greek opposition figures, who argue the government has left the country’s borders vulnerable to the proliferation of modern warfare technology. Despite the alarm, Defense Minister Nikos Dendias attempted to minimize the incident, claiming the government is working to bolster its own anti-drone capabilities.
However, the discovery highlights the unpredictable nature of the ongoing conflict and the potential for spillover into neutral waters, especially as Greece and Ukraine have recently entered into a joint cooperation deal regarding naval drone production.
