FIFA is scrambling to address a ticket distribution crisis for the Iranian national team after U.S. sanctions effectively blocked the Iranian Football Federation (FFIRI) from processing ticket sales.
The disruption stems from Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) regulations, which restrict U.S.-based entities from engaging in financial transactions with the Iranian regime.
While the FFIRI has complained about 'political interference' and 'unfairness,' the reality is that American trade sanctions are being applied as intended to hold the state sponsor of terror accountable.
The Iranian federation, which has demanded that FIFA allow individuals linked to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) to participate in the tournament, has faced repeated hurdles, including visa denials for administrative staff and border rejections for officials.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio has maintained a firm stance, welcoming the players while making it clear that those with ties to the IRGC will face strict entry restrictions.
As the tournament approaches, Iran's attempt to play the victim ignores the fact that their international isolation is a direct consequence of their own hostile actions and the security risks they pose to the host nations.
