Austria has finally taken decisive action against Russian subversion, expelling three diplomats who were caught using diplomatic cover to facilitate a massive spying operation.

Foreign Minister Beate Meinl-Reisinger confirmed the move, citing a 'forest of antennas' installed atop Russian diplomatic buildings—including the embassy in Vienna—used to intercept satellite data from international organizations.

For too long, these facilities have served as a hub for Russian signals intelligence, a reality that has long compromised Austrian security. The Kremlin, predictably, reacted with bluster, calling the expulsion 'unjustified' and threatening a 'harsh' response.

This incident is merely the latest in a string of Russian intelligence scandals plaguing the region, including the ongoing trial of former intelligence official Egisto Ott, who is accused of selling secrets to the FSB and fugitive Jan Marsalek.

Vienna has historically been a playground for foreign intelligence, but the Austrian government is now signaling that it will no longer tolerate the abuse of diplomatic immunity to undermine national security.

Despite these expulsions, roughly 220 Russian personnel remain accredited in the country, leaving plenty of work for Austrian authorities to do in rooting out the remaining hostile actors.
