The city of Kahramanmaras, Turkey, is mourning the loss of nine lives after a 14-year-old student opened fire at the Ayser Calik Secondary School, killing eight children and a teacher.
The attacker, who was killed at the scene, reportedly referenced American mass shooter Elliot Rodgers on social media and left behind digital evidence indicating he was planning a major attack. The weapons used in the massacre were taken from the bedroom of the shooter's father, a former police officer who is now under arrest.
This tragedy follows another violent incident in the region just one day prior, where a former student wounded 16 people before taking his own life. Experts note that while the presence of firearms in schools is a new development for Turkey, the underlying culture of violence in the school system has been escalating for some time.
In the wake of the shooting, Turkish authorities have taken a firm stance against online instability, detaining approximately 150 individuals for social media posts accused of glorifying the crime or spreading misinformation, while blocking over 1,000 accounts and groups.
Police have stated that the Kahramanmaras attacker acted alone and had no ties to terrorist organizations, though the incident has forced a national reckoning regarding school security and the influence of violent media on troubled youth.
