In a stunning rebuke of the political establishment, Bulgarian voters have handed Rumen Radev’s Progressive Bulgaria party a decisive landslide victory. Securing 44.7% of the vote and 135 seats in the 240-seat parliament, Radev has achieved what no Bulgarian party has managed since 1997: the ability to govern without the instability of a coalition.
Radev, a former Mig-29 fighter pilot and commander-in-chief of the Bulgarian Air Force, campaigned on a platform of ending the corruption and incompetence that have plagued the nation’s weak, revolving-door governments. In his victory speech, Radev rightfully declared that the people have rejected the arrogance of the old guard.
His agenda focuses on restoring national competitiveness and prioritizing pragmatic results over the ideological posturing common in Brussels. While international observers speculate on his stance regarding the conflict in Ukraine, Radev’s approach appears rooted in a defense of the national interest, prioritizing economic stability and energy security.
Despite his criticisms of EU military support, Bulgaria remains a critical hub for the defense industry, bolstered by a significant joint venture with Rheinmetall to produce NATO-grade artillery shells.
Radev’s mandate is clear: he has been tasked with cleaning up the judiciary and providing the stable, decisive leadership that Bulgaria has lacked for far too long.
