The global football establishment is in open revolt against FIFA President Gianni Infantino, as UEFA and CONCACAF member associations threaten a total boycott of future World Cups and FIFA competitions.

The standoff centers on Infantino’s push to create a commercial subsidiary, FIFA Forward Enterprise, which would allow private investors—including the American venture capital firm Thrive Eternal—to purchase minority stakes in the sport’s most prestigious events.

UEFA, representing 55 member nations, slammed the proposal as a "profound failure of leadership" and an "abdication of duty," asserting that the World Cup is a sporting legacy, not an investment product to be sold off to the highest bidder.

The atmosphere at emergency meetings has been described as venomous, with European officials accusing FIFA of governing through intimidation and secret deals. While Infantino has attempted to entice member associations with promises of $40 million payouts for those who back his plan, the opposition remains firm.

UEFA and CONCACAF, which command a significant voting bloc, have signaled they will not be coerced into accepting the irreversible capture of their competitions by private interests. With the first test of this boycott looming during the Women’s World Cup play-offs in October, the future of global football governance hangs in the balance.

Critics of the plan, including former FA chairman David Bernstein, have suggested that Infantino’s attempt to bypass proper governance and consultation may ultimately cost him his position, though the opaque nature of FIFA’s internal politics leaves the outcome uncertain.
