An ambulance leaves the scene following a deadly school shooting, in the southeastern province of Kahramanmaras

The town of Kahramanmaras is reeling after a 14-year-old attacker stormed the Ayser Calik Secondary School, killing eight students and one teacher before being killed himself. According to Interior Minister Mustafa Cifci, the carnage left another 13 people wounded, with six remaining in critical condition.

The assailant, who was a student at the school, reportedly entered two classrooms armed with five guns and seven magazines. Local governor Mukerren Unluer confirmed that the weapons used in the massacre belonged to the attacker’s father, a former police officer who has since been detained by authorities.

As the attack unfolded, terrified students were seen jumping from windows to escape the gunfire. While the motive remains under investigation, the incident marks a devastating second school shooting in Turkey in as many days, raising urgent questions about security and the accessibility of firearms within private homes.

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan issued a statement wishing for a recovery for the victims, but for the families in Kahramanmaras, the damage is irreversible.
