The Latvian government has imploded after Prime Minister Evika Silina’s coalition fell apart in the wake of a security failure involving stray Ukrainian drones. The crisis reached a breaking point when Silina fired Defense Minister Andris Spruds following the incursion of three drones into Latvian territory on May 7.
The drones, believed to be Ukrainian UAVs targeting Russia that were diverted by electronic jamming, crashed into eastern Latvia, including one that struck an oil storage facility near Rezekne. While no casualties were reported, the public backlash was swift and severe.
Residents slammed the government for a delayed and insufficient response, noting that the emergency alert system failed to activate for an hour after the crash.
Silina, who had demanded higher accountability for the nation's defense sector, accused her coalition partners of prioritizing political games over national security after the Progressives party withdrew their support in retaliation for Spruds's dismissal.
Despite the collapse of her government just months before the October general election, Silina vowed to remain active in politics. President Edgars Rinkevics is now tasked with overseeing the formation of a new government as Latvia continues its aggressive push to bolster its military capabilities against the looming threat of Russian aggression.
