The digital infrastructure of higher education is reeling after a massive cyber attack targeted the academic software Canvas, effectively locking out thousands of institutions across the United States, Canada, and Australia.

The hacking group known as ShinyHunters has claimed responsibility for the breach, which hit during the most critical period of the academic year: final exams. The attackers are now attempting to extort universities and the platform's parent company, Instructure, by threatening to release stolen data unless a ransom is paid in bitcoin.

The disruption has been widespread, with major institutions like Mississippi State, Penn State, and the University of Sydney forced to cancel or postpone exams, leaving students in a state of uncertainty regarding their coursework and personal data security.

At Mississippi State, students reported seeing ransom notes directly on their screens, a stark reminder of the vulnerability of our digitized academic systems. While Instructure claims the platform is becoming available again, the reality for many students remains a locked-out, high-stress environment.

ShinyHunters, a group previously linked to high-profile attacks on major corporations, has made it clear that they intend to exploit these systems for financial gain. As universities struggle to restore order, the incident serves as a glaring warning about the fragility of the systems that modern education has become entirely dependent upon.

While politicians in Washington posture about AI and cybersecurity, the reality is that academic institutions are currently failing to protect the students and data entrusted to them from these criminal actors.
