Sovereignty Must Be Defended, Not Negotiated

A coordinated mass breach at Ceuta exposes the failure of a nation to protect its borders and demands a decisive, militarized response.

When a sovereign enclave is breached by thousands of illegal migrants, the breach is not a humanitarian crisis but a deliberate assault on national sovereignty. The only legitimate response is a decisive, militarized defense that restores the rule of law.

In Ceuta, between 2,000 and 3,000 individuals forced their way in on Thursday, using inflatable rafts and direct assaults on border fencing. The local leader, Juan Jesús Vivas, sounded the alarm and demanded intervention from Madrid, highlighting how the failure to secure the perimeter has left the enclave’s resources overwhelmed and its citizens vulnerable.

The fallout is felt by local taxpayers who must shoulder the cost of emergency services, infrastructure repairs, and security upgrades. Law and order break down when borders are treated as suggestions, and the resulting chaos erodes the very liberties that a sovereign state is meant to protect.

The Ceuta breach is part of a broader pattern of disregard for borders, as seen when a Russian Kh‑101 cruise missile violated NATO airspace and struck Polish soil. That incursion, part of a coordinated strike against Ukrainian cities, underscored that unchecked aggression threatens the stability of the entire region and demands a firm Western response.

Similarly, the administration’s move to regulate artificial intelligence after OpenAI security failures reflects a recognition that unchecked innovation can be weaponized by foreign adversaries. Protecting national security requires proactive measures, whether on the frontiers or in cyberspace.

Accountability is essential. When a former pandemic chief invokes the Fifth Amendment over 100 times in a Senate hearing, it signals a culture of evasion that undermines public trust. A government that cannot answer its own citizens must be held to the same standards it demands of those who threaten its borders.
