Wicknell Chivayo, a 43-year-old Zimbabwean businessman whose career was defined by massive government contracts and close proximity to African heads of state, was killed Wednesday in a helicopter crash in the Marondera rural area.
The crash, which occurred approximately 70km east of Harare, resulted in the deaths of all six occupants, including Chivayo’s wife, Lucy Muteke, and two pilots. Aviation officials have recovered the aircraft's black box, though the cause of the disaster remains under investigation.
Chivayo’s rise to prominence was marked by significant controversy, including a 2004 fraud conviction and long-standing legal disputes regarding a $172 million solar power project awarded to his company, Intratrek Zimbabwe, by the state-owned Zimbabwe Power Company.
Despite his history of legal trouble and persistent allegations of wrongdoing—which he consistently denied—Chivayo maintained a high-profile lifestyle, frequently boasting of his access to leaders such as President Emmerson Mnangagwa and Kenyan President William Ruto.
His public displays of wealth and philanthropy often drew criticism from political opponents who questioned the nature of his influence.
While President Mnangagwa and other regional leaders have offered tributes to the late businessman, the investigation into the crash continues as authorities work to determine why the helicopter went down shortly after departing from a rural property.
