Vladimir Putin’s war machine has expanded its scope of destruction, moving beyond energy grids to target the digital backbone of Ukrainian society.

Recent Russian drone and missile strikes have hammered data centers and telecommunications hubs across the country, including facilities in Kyiv, in a calculated effort to sever internet access and disrupt the daily lives of millions.

While Moscow attempts to justify these strikes by claiming the sites are utilized by Ukrainian military intelligence, the reality is a widening campaign of terror that has resulted in civilian casualties, including the tragic death of a 14-year-old boy.

President Volodymyr Zelensky has condemned the escalation, noting that Russia is intentionally targeting American and international businesses, data centers, and internet providers to erode the country’s ability to function.

Despite the damage, Ukrainian officials maintain that the nation’s decentralized network remains resilient, even as they prepare for potential service disruptions and rising costs for repairs.

The Kremlin’s shift toward targeting infrastructure comes as Putin continues to use the threat of further 'retaliatory strikes' to dictate the terms of any potential peace negotiations. Meanwhile, the conflict is increasingly spilling over borders, with Polish prosecutors investigating a suspected Russian-backed arson attack on a Starlink satellite station.

As the European Union bolsters its support with a new €6.6 billion aid package, Moscow’s hybrid aggression serves as a stark reminder that the threat to European security is not merely contained to the front lines in Ukraine.
