Zelensky Warns Airlines: Russian Skies Are Now a War Zone

As Ukraine ramps up drone strikes deep into Russian territory, Kyiv warns commercial carriers that the Kremlin’s airspace is no longer safe for civilian travel.

The war is officially returning to Russia, and President Volodymyr Zelensky is putting the international aviation industry on notice.

As Ukraine intensifies its drone campaign against strategic targets deep within Russian territory, Kyiv has formally notified the United Nations and the International Civil Aviation Organization that Russian airspace can no longer be considered safe for civilian transit.

While many Western carriers abandoned Russian routes following the 2022 invasion, airlines from China, Turkey, and various Gulf states continue to utilize the region to save on fuel and time. Zelensky’s message to these carriers is clear: the Russian sky is becoming a theater of conflict where drone activity will be a constant, unavoidable factor.

This escalation follows months of Ukrainian strikes on Russian energy facilities and logistics hubs, which have already forced the Kremlin to repeatedly ground flights at major Moscow airports under its 'Kovyor' air defense protocols.

Predictably, Vladimir Putin has attempted to deflect from the reality of the war reaching his own borders by labeling the warning a 'declaration of state terrorism.' However, the reality remains that Russia’s own history of aviation disasters—including the downing of MH17 and the accidental destruction of an Azerbaijani airliner—proves that the Kremlin’s air defense systems are a liability to civilian safety.

As Ukraine continues to bring the fight to the aggressor, airlines that choose to prioritize profits over the safety of their passengers by flying over a combat zone do so at their own peril.
