Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema has secured a second five-year term, capturing 60% of the vote in an election that has left the political landscape deeply divided. While Hichilema touted the results as a triumph for Zambian democracy, his primary challenger, Brian Mundubile, has rejected the outcome.

Mundubile, who garnered 38% of the vote, has gone into hiding, claiming he is under the protection of an international human rights body due to credible threats against his life. The opposition leader alleges that his home was targeted by armed personnel in an armored vehicle, resulting in gunfire and the disappearance of former minister Mutotwe Kafwaya.

These claims stand in stark contrast to the government’s narrative, as authorities have accused opposition figures of plotting an insurrection and storing military-grade weapons. Hichilema’s camp has dismissed the opposition's accounts as false, maintaining that the state is upholding law and order.

Meanwhile, international observers have noted concerns regarding the fairness of the contest, citing reports of intimidation, restricted media access, and a brief, controversial suspension of the vote count.

As Mundubile prepares to challenge the results in court, the nation remains on edge, waiting to see if the legal system can provide the transparency that observers say was lacking during the campaign.
