With President Xi Jinping set to arrive in Washington for a high-stakes state visit next week, the families of Americans languishing in Chinese prisons are turning to President Trump to demand their release.

Among those pleading for intervention is Sylvia Zin, whose husband, U Min Zin, was arrested in Kunming this June on dubious charges of spying and endangering national security.

Min Zin, a think tank director who has studied Chinese influence in Myanmar, is one of several Americans the State Department has officially designated as 'wrongfully detained.' During a House Foreign Affairs Committee hearing, Congresswoman Young Kim issued a stark warning to the American public, stating that Beijing is willing to take citizens hostage to use as leverage in diplomatic negotiations.

The hearing, titled 'Lives, Not Leverage,' highlighted the regime's pattern of targeting researchers whose work inconveniences the Communist Party. Sylvia Zin testified that her husband has been subjected to grueling daily interrogations and remains cut off from his family, with consular visits serving as the only proof of his survival.

The families are banking on President Trump’s established track record of successfully negotiating the return of wrongfully detained Americans.

While a senior White House official confirmed that resolving these cases remains a top priority, the pressure is mounting for the administration to hold Beijing accountable for its hostage-taking tactics when the two leaders meet face-to-face.
