Millions of EVs, including Tesla and Xiaomi models, are being recalled as design-over-function aesthetics face a reality check.

The obsession with minimalist, high-tech aesthetics in the electric vehicle industry has hit a wall of reality. China’s State Administration for Market Regulation has ordered a massive recall affecting more than four million vehicles—including those from Tesla, Xiaomi, XPeng, and Geely—due to dangerous door handle designs.

These hidden, electronically-powered handles, while marketed as sleek and aerodynamic, have been flagged for creating life-threatening obstacles during crashes. Experts and regulators have warned that when electrical systems fail, these doors can become impossible to open, effectively trapping passengers inside or preventing rescuers from reaching them.

The recall comes as China prepares to ban such designs entirely by 2027, requiring all new vehicles to feature reliable, mechanical emergency releases. The safety risks are not limited to China; similar concerns have been raised in the United States, where Tesla has faced lawsuits involving passengers allegedly trapped in vehicles following collisions.

While manufacturers are attempting to mitigate the issue with warning labels and software updates, critics argue these are mere bandages on a fundamental design flaw.

The push for 'sleek' technology should never come at the expense of basic passenger safety, yet the industry continues to prioritize form over the critical necessity of a functional, mechanical exit.
