Nigeria's once-mighty PDP faces total collapse

Internal rot, mass defections, and legal chaos leave a former political giant on the verge of extinction.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), a political machine that dominated Nigeria for 16 years following the end of military rule, is currently staring into the abyss of political extinction. Founded in 1998, the party once held such a grip on power that its leadership arrogantly predicted decades of uninterrupted governance.

That fantasy shattered in 2015 when the party lost the presidency to the All Progressives Congress (APC), marking the beginning of a terminal decline. The party’s inability to adapt to life in the opposition, combined with a catastrophic wave of defections, has left its foundations in ruins.

By the end of 2025, the PDP had lost all of its state governorships, including the loss of Oyo state just last month. The collapse has been accelerated by a bitter leadership struggle between rival factions.

A faction led by Nyesom Wike—a former PDP stalwart now serving in the APC-led government—has gained legal legitimacy, effectively locking the rival faction out of the ballot for the upcoming January general election.

While some loyalists cling to the hope of a comeback by 2032, analysts argue that the party is beyond repair without a desperate alliance with other opposition groups. For a party that once claimed to be the future of Nigeria, the reality is now a fight for survival in a political landscape that has clearly moved on.
