Modi Urges Putin to End War as Russia Remains Committed to Military Objectives

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has once again issued a public plea to Russian President Vladimir Putin to bring an end to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. During a recent exchange, Modi stated that every day spent in war sets humanity back, urging a shift toward peace.

Despite the high-profile nature of the request, it represents a continuation of India’s established policy of strategic autonomy rather than a departure from its long-standing relationship with Moscow. India remains a critical partner for Russia, relying on Moscow for approximately 40% of its defense imports and significant energy supplies.

While Western nations continue to pressure Delhi to take a more aggressive stance against the Kremlin, India has maintained a neutral position, balancing its membership in the Quad with its ties to the Brics and Shanghai Cooperation Organisation.

Putin’s response to the Prime Minister was characteristically vague, thanking Modi while offering no concrete shift in policy. The Kremlin remains firmly convinced that time is on its side and that military victory is achievable.

As Russia intensifies its strikes against Ukrainian infrastructure and military facilities, it is clear that the Russian leadership views the current conflict through the lens of total victory. Despite the domestic strain caused by Ukrainian drone strikes on Russian refineries, there is no indication that Putin intends to pause his operations.

For now, the war continues, as the Kremlin remains committed to its own terms for peace, dictated by military success on the ground.
