The existential struggle for Ukraine’s sovereignty is being undermined by a disturbing trend of domestic violence against those tasked with mobilization. As the conflict against Russian forces enters its fifth year, the Ukrainian military is facing a critical shortage of manpower, leading to a desperate push for conscription.

This effort has been met with hostility from those unwilling to join the fight, resulting in over 600 documented assaults on recruitment officers to date. The National Police Service has issued a stern warning, noting that these attacks are becoming increasingly threatening.

The violence has reached a fever pitch, with reports of stabbings in April—one of which resulted in a fatality—and a chaotic incident in Lviv where a mob of 200 protesters surrounded officers, destroying their vehicle to prevent the detention of a suspected draft dodger.

President Volodymyr Zelensky has condemned these assaults on soldiers, yet the internal resistance highlights the immense strain on a nation fighting for its survival while struggling to fill its ranks.
