Wall Street Journal correspondent Evan Gershkovich has broken his silence regarding the harrowing 16 months he spent held captive by the Russian regime. In a recent interview, Gershkovich detailed the moment he realized he had been lured into a trap, as masked Russian agents swarmed him at a restaurant in March 2023.

Following his arrest, the Russian state moved to sentence him to 16 years on fabricated espionage charges—a blatant attempt to use an American citizen as a political pawn. Both Gershkovich and his employer have consistently maintained that the charges were entirely baseless.

While the previous administration prioritized his return, resulting in his release during a high-profile prisoner exchange in 2024, the incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by hostile foreign powers that disregard the rule of law and the safety of American citizens.
