Venezuela Releases Political Prisoners Following High-Stakes Meeting with President Trump

The release of dissidents comes as the interim government attempts to navigate international pressure and domestic instability.

In a move that highlights the shifting political landscape in Venezuela, the interim government has released a number of political prisoners, including Wilder Vasquez, who was previously sentenced for allegedly plotting against former dictator Nicolás Maduro.

The releases, confirmed by the rights group Foro Penal, also included Miguel Castillo Cedeño and Frank Cabañas, the latter of whom had been detained for nine years.

These actions follow a high-profile meeting between interim President Delcy Rodriguez and President Donald Trump in New York, a summit that has drawn mixed reactions from opposition figures who remain skeptical of the interim administration's true intentions.

While the government attempts to frame these releases as a gesture of reconciliation, critics point out that the regime continues to hold a significant number of political prisoners, and the path to truly free and fair elections remains blocked.

The Trump administration has backed Rodriguez following the removal of Maduro on drug charges earlier this year, a decision aimed at maintaining stability in a nation reeling from years of socialist mismanagement and rigged elections.

Despite the regime's vague promises of future elections, the reality on the ground remains a struggle between the remnants of authoritarian rule and the urgent demand for democratic accountability.
