The Department of Justice is officially investigating E. Jean Carroll to determine if she lied under oath during her civil litigation against President Donald Trump. At the heart of the probe is whether Carroll committed perjury when she testified in a 2022 deposition that she received no outside funding for her legal battle.
This claim was later undermined by legal filings revealing that LinkedIn co-founder Reid Hoffman had provided financial support for her legal fees and expenses. While a previous appellate court ruling suggested Carroll may have simply forgotten about the funding, the federal government is now taking a closer look at the veracity of her sworn statements.
The investigation, reportedly being led by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Illinois, examines the potential involvement of Hoffman, whose non-profit is based in Chicago.
Legal experts note that while perjury cases arising from civil litigation are historically rare and require proof of willful deception, the DOJ is now tasked with determining if Carroll knowingly misled the court.
President Trump has consistently denied the allegations against him and is currently seeking to have the initial judgment overturned by the Supreme Court, maintaining that the entire legal campaign against him was politically motivated.
