Uefa Threatens Boycott as Fifa President Infantino Clings to Power

European football leaders reject Fifa's empty apologies, demanding accountability for back-room deals and opaque management.

The standoff between Uefa and Fifa continues to escalate, with European football leaders signaling that a boycott of major tournaments remains a viable option.

Despite Fifa’s attempt to move past the controversy surrounding the failed 'Fifa Forward Enterprise' (FFE) proposal—a scheme that would have sold off stakes in major competitions—Uefa remains unconvinced.

The European governing body has explicitly stated that its conditions for resolution have not been met, noting that Fifa has failed to provide sufficient assurances that such opaque, back-room attempts to disfigure the sport will not recur.

The English FA has joined the fray, formally withdrawing its support for Gianni Infantino, citing the disastrous FFE plan. While Infantino has attempted to project strength by rallying support from confederations in Africa and South America, as well as select national associations, Uefa maintains that the president has lost all credibility.

Internal dissent within Fifa has been met with a consolidation of power, as Infantino surrounds himself with loyalists while critics within his own management board face the threat of termination. With a presidential election looming in March, Uefa faces an uphill battle to secure the 106 votes required for a no-confidence motion.

As the clock ticks toward the Fifa Women's U20s World Cup in September, the threat of a European boycott serves as the final, desperate lever for those seeking to restore integrity to a governing body that many now view as a closed-off, unaccountable regime.
