Fifa Boss Gianni Infantino Faces Calls for Ouster After Secretive Investment Scheme Collapses

The leadership of Fifa is in total disarray as international football governing bodies, including Uefa and Concacaf, have launched a scathing critique of President Gianni Infantino.

The backlash follows Infantino’s failed attempt to push through a secretive plan to sell stakes in Fifa’s competitions to private investors, a move that critics have labeled a 'shabby' and 'opaque' betrayal of the organization's fiduciary duties.

Uefa, the governing body for European football, did not mince words, accusing Infantino of failing to deliver on his 2016 campaign promises of transparency and fiscal responsibility.

They characterized the now-scrapped proposal as a 'victory for the whole game' but insisted that the damage to trust is severe, noting that the current leadership has lost the confidence of the football family.

Concacaf, which oversees North and Central American football, joined the chorus of condemnation, calling for a 'full review' of Fifa’s leadership and asserting that accountability must not be optional.

The failed scheme, which reportedly involved interest from Joshua Kushner’s venture capital firm Thrive, was described by some as a 'brand nightmare.' With the Fifa Congress approaching in March, Infantino faces immense pressure as he seeks a fourth term.

While the Qatar Football Association has offered support, the overwhelming consensus among major confederations is that the organization’s governance has been compromised by unilateral decision-making and a disregard for established processes.

As Uefa and other bodies push for a new framework to ensure resources are used for the development of the game rather than private interests, the future of Infantino’s presidency remains in serious doubt.
