FIFA is under fire for a controversial proposal to invite private equity investment into its commercial and event operations, a move that critics argue compromises the soul of the sport.

The plan involves creating a new subsidiary, FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE), to consolidate revenue streams, with American venture capital firm Thrive Eternal—founded by Joshua Kushner—slated to lead the investor group. While FIFA claims the move aims to expand development funding to its 211 member nations, the proposal has triggered a fierce backlash.

UEFA has publicly condemned the plan, stating it 'crosses a line' that governing bodies should never approach, while Andy Burnham, the Mayor of Greater Manchester, accused FIFA of 'selling out' the World Cup.

Critics fear that bringing in private shareholders will inevitably force FIFA to expand tournament sizes and frequency to maximize returns, potentially destabilizing the international match calendar.

Despite FIFA's insistence that it will retain control over sporting governance, the lack of transparency regarding potential financial beneficiaries has fueled deep skepticism.

The proposal, which could be voted on by member nations in March, represents a significant power struggle over the future of global football, with many stakeholders viewing it as a dangerous shift toward prioritizing profit over the game itself.
