The Ekurhuleni region east of Johannesburg has become a graveyard, with police confirming the discovery of twelve bodies in just eight weeks.

The victims, found in states of horrific violence, have sparked widespread alarm as law enforcement struggles to contain a surge of brutality that has claimed the lives of women ranging from their 20s to their late 30s.

While police have made arrests in three isolated cases, the vast majority of these murders remain unsolved, leaving the community vulnerable to further violence.

President Cyril Ramaphosa has characterized the killings as a stain on the national conscience, yet the grim reality is that South Africa continues to suffer from one of the highest homicide rates in the world.

Between April and June alone, over 5,400 people were murdered across the country, with human rights data suggesting an average of six women are killed every single day.

Authorities have now established a task team and are offering a 400,000 rand reward for information leading to arrests, but for the families of the victims, the government's response comes far too late. As the body count rises, the failure to maintain basic law and order remains the central issue facing the nation.
