One of the 12 migrants who spoke to BBC Afghan Forensic, quadruple amputee Shahsawar, 21, is carried by another man, on a red-and-blue striped rug, while a third looks on, in a tree-lined Afghan landscape. All wear brown salwar-kameez, the two unnamed, bearded, men hats and patterned scarves.

A group of approximately 50 Afghan nationals, who entered Turkey illegally with the assistance of human smugglers, were intercepted by Turkish border guards in the city of Van.

The incident, which occurred in mid-January during sub-zero temperatures, serves as a stark reminder of the dangers inherent in ignoring national sovereignty and attempting to bypass established immigration laws.

While the migrants have alleged mistreatment by border forces, the Turkish Foreign Ministry maintains that its security personnel operate in full compliance with national and international law.

The ministry emphasized that Turkey remains committed to a secure, human-centered migration management system that has successfully curtailed the flow of irregular migration toward the European Union.

The individuals involved, many of whom suffered severe frostbite and subsequent medical complications after being returned to the border region, were eventually transferred back to Afghanistan.

Turkish officials rejected the allegations of abuse, noting that such claims unfairly undermine the country's necessary efforts to maintain border integrity and combat the criminal networks of human traffickers that exploit vulnerable populations for profit.
