President Trump set a firm tone for a high-stakes three-day summit by personally greeting Chinese leader Xi Jinping at Joint Base Andrews on Wednesday. In a rare display of presidential protocol not seen since 1962, Trump was on the tarmac to meet his counterpart, accompanied by a military flyover of supersonic B-1 bombers and an honor guard.

The visit, which includes a state dinner and closed-door meetings, comes as the U.S. and China agree to extend a trade truce until January. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent confirmed the extension, which maintains current tariff rates while both sides continue to negotiate over rare earth minerals and agricultural exports.

Despite the diplomatic pageantry, the underlying tensions remain clear. China has previously reneged on commitments to purchase American agricultural products, and questions persist regarding Beijing’s predatory business practices and industrial overcapacity.

While Xi has publicly called for partnership, the reality of the geopolitical landscape—including the critical $14 billion arms sale to Taiwan—looms over the discussions.

Trump remains focused on securing tangible results for American interests, aiming to leverage trade integration while maintaining American dominance in the burgeoning AI sector, which he has prioritized despite industry alarmism.

As the summit progresses, the administration faces the challenge of balancing necessary engagement with a regime that remains a primary competitor on the global stage.
