President Trump made history on Monday as the first sitting U.S. president to attend an NBA Finals game, arriving at Madison Square Garden via Marine One and a motorcade to watch the New York Knicks face the San Antonio Spurs.
While the president was accompanied by his granddaughter, Knicks owner James Dolan, and several members of his administration, the atmosphere in the heavily Democratic city was predictably tense.
The presence of the president necessitated significant security protocols, including street closures and an airport-style security gauntlet for attendees, which some fans complained disrupted the usual flow of the evening. When Trump appeared on the arena's jumbotron during the national anthem, a portion of the crowd responded with booing.
Despite the local friction, the president remained unfazed, later telling reporters that he perceived the reception as enthusiastic. The security measures, while inconvenient for some, were a standard and necessary component of protecting the leader of the free world in a high-profile public setting.
Meanwhile, the Knicks fell to the Spurs 111-115, narrowing their series lead to 2-1 in a season that has seen the team return to the Finals for the first time since 1999.
