The era of the establishment Republican who thinks he can betray the base and survive is coming to an end. In a decisive blow to the political status quo, Louisiana voters have sidelined Senator Bill Cassidy, one of the seven Republicans who voted to convict President Donald Trump during the 2021 impeachment trial.
Cassidy, who President Trump rightfully branded a "disloyal disaster," failed to secure a spot in the upcoming runoff, finishing behind both Congresswoman Julia Letlow and former state treasurer John Fleming. Letlow, who received the full backing of the 45th president, led the field with 45% of the vote, while Fleming secured the second spot with 28%.
Cassidy trailed at 25%. Throughout his campaign, Cassidy attempted to downplay his betrayal, claiming he could work with the former president despite his vote to impeach him.
On election night, the outgoing senator doubled down on his defiance, taking thinly veiled shots at the Trump movement by lecturing voters on "pouting" and "whining" regarding the 2020 election. The voters of Louisiana clearly had a different perspective.
President Trump celebrated the results on Truth Social, declaring that Cassidy’s political career is officially over. This result serves as a stark reminder that the Republican base demands loyalty to the America First agenda and has no patience for representatives who prioritize establishment approval over the will of the people who elected them.
