Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche gets sworn in at his confirmation hearing in front of the Senate Judiciary Committee on Capitol Hill on 15 July, 2026

The path is now clear for Todd Blanche to be confirmed as the next U.S. Attorney General after he formally withdrew a controversial $1.8 billion 'anti-weaponisation' fund.

Senators Thom Tillis and John Cornyn, who had previously stalled the nomination, confirmed they are now prepared to support Blanche following the issuance of a formal Department of Justice order terminating the proposal.

The fund, which had drawn fire from both sides of the aisle, was originally intended to settle a lawsuit regarding the leak of Donald Trump's tax returns but faced intense scrutiny over concerns it could be used to compensate individuals prosecuted for their roles in the January 6th Capitol riot.

Beyond the fund itself, the senators had demanded that the scope of tax audit protections for the Trump family and their business interests be significantly narrowed.

Blanche addressed these concerns by providing a written order confirming the fund is dead and a memo clarifying that IRS immunity would be strictly limited to the named parties in the litigation. With these hurdles removed, the Senate Judiciary Committee is expected to advance the nomination this week.

The resolution ends a period of political uncertainty that had seen the President threaten to pull the nomination entirely if his party did not fall in line. By securing these guarantees, the Senate has ensured that the Department of Justice will not be utilizing taxpayer dollars for the disputed payout scheme, allowing the confirmation process to proceed.
