Opposition leader Rahul Gandhi is once again attempting to turn a matter of basic decorum into a political crusade. Following protests where young activists directed vulgar, expletive-laden insults at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Gandhi has attacked the Prime Minister for expressing shock at the behavior.

While the protesters targeted the government over exam policy, their decision to resort to crude abuse drew widespread condemnation, even from those critical of the administration.

Prime Minister Modi, in a measured response, noted that such language has no place in a civilized society, specifically expressing disappointment that young women were engaging in such behavior.

Rather than addressing the decline in public discourse, Gandhi seized the opportunity to lecture the nation on 'patriarchy,' claiming that the Prime Minister’s reaction was a double standard. The debate highlights a growing rot in public debate, where activists increasingly view profanity as a legitimate tool of protest rather than a failure of character.

While some activists argue that vulgarity is a fundamental aspect of dissent, sociologists warn that the normalization of such language in Parliament, courtrooms, and on the streets signals a dangerous breakdown in democratic norms and mutual respect.

Despite Gandhi’s attempts to frame the issue through the lens of gender grievance, the core problem remains a society struggling to maintain standards of civility in the face of increasingly aggressive and disrespectful political activism.
