The political landscape in Tanzania has been rocked by the expulsion of Vice President Emmanuel Nchimbi from the ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) party.

Nchimbi, who served only 10 months in the role, was purged for what party leadership termed 'indiscipline' after he publicly urged citizens to 'fight for a new constitution.' This defiance signaled a clear and irreparable rift with President Samia Suluhu Hassan.

Nchimbi, the first vice president in the nation's history to resign, announced his departure on social media, claiming he was convinced the president desired changes. His exit follows a tenure marked by instability; he and President Samia were sworn in last November following a controversial election that saw the main opposition party boycott the process.

The aftermath of that election was marred by violent unrest, with official inquiries confirming at least 500 deaths. In a swift move to consolidate control, President Samia chaired an extraordinary party meeting to nominate Energy Minister Deogratius Ndejembi as the replacement.

Ndejembi’s nomination now heads to parliament for approval, as the ruling party moves to silence dissent and maintain its grip on power.
