Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson announced his resignation on Thursday following a narrow defeat in the country's general election. Preliminary results indicate a razor-thin margin, with only 50,000 votes separating the two political blocs in a nation of 10 million.

The centre-left opposition, led by Magdalena Andersson of the Social Democrats, is projected to secure 176 seats in the 349-seat Riksdag, effectively ending the conservative coalition's tenure. Kristersson’s government had prioritized a necessary and dramatic tightening of Sweden's migration policies, supported by the Sweden Democrats.

While the Sweden Democrats saw a dip in support for the first time since 2010, their focus on crime and border security had previously forced a long-overdue shift in the national conversation.

Andersson, whose party has dominated Swedish politics for much of the last century, now faces the difficult task of cobbling together a coalition among disparate left-wing factions, including the Green and Left parties.

Kristersson noted that the incoming government faces a complicated path to formation, as the ideological divides between these parties on critical issues like taxation remain significant. As the Speaker of the Riksdag begins the process of proposing a new leader, the future of Sweden’s recent conservative policy gains remains in serious doubt.
