The wheels of justice have finally turned in Sri Lanka as the High Court convicted 15 men involved in the 2019 Easter Sunday bombings, a coordinated massacre that left 270 people dead and over 500 injured.

Among those found guilty was Naufer Moulavi, identified by prosecutors as the mastermind behind the suicide attacks that targeted churches and luxury hotels. These attacks, carried out by Islamist extremists, marked the deadliest violence in the country since the conclusion of the civil war in 2009.

The trial was exhaustive, involving over 2,300 witnesses and the presentation of thousands of pieces of evidence, including explosives and weapons. While the conviction of these 15 individuals provides a measure of accountability, the case has long been marred by the government's previous failures.

The attacks were preceded by a catastrophic intelligence lapse, as authorities ignored specific warnings from India. The resulting fallout led to a Supreme Court ruling holding former President Maithripala Sirisena responsible for national security failures, and the recent sentencing of two senior officials for criminal negligence.

While the perpetrators have been held to account, the legacy of this tragedy remains a stark reminder of the lethal consequences of government incompetence in the face of radical extremism.
