Dong Guangping, a 68-year-old former Chinese police officer turned activist, is currently in the custody of South Korean authorities after arriving in Korean waters via a small rubber boat.
Dong, who has a long history of clashing with the Chinese state over his participation in Tiananmen Square commemorations, was rescued off the coast of Taean after a local fishing vessel reported his presence. South Korean officials have confirmed that Dong is under investigation for immigration violations and will be referred to prosecutors.
This latest attempt at freedom follows a lifetime of state-sponsored persecution, including multiple prison sentences for 'inciting subversion of state power.' Dong’s history of escape attempts is extensive; he has been apprehended and deported by authorities in Thailand, Vietnam, and China on previous occasions.
While activists and NGOs are pressuring Seoul to grant political asylum and prevent his return to China, the South Korean government is currently proceeding with standard immigration enforcement protocols.
Dong’s journey, which spanned over 30 hours at sea, highlights the extreme lengths individuals are forced to take to escape the Chinese government's reach.
