A terrifying crime wave has gripped the area surrounding Kempton Park, north-east of Johannesburg, where the bodies of eight women have been discovered over the last two months. The victims, most of whom were found partially or fully naked, have sparked widespread outrage and fear.

While police have not yet officially classified the string of deaths as the work of a single serial killer, they are investigating the possibility that a coordinated group or copycat criminals are responsible for the carnage.

President Cyril Ramaphosa has pledged that law enforcement will prioritize these cases, though the frequency of the discoveries—including three bodies found just this week—highlights a systemic failure to maintain public safety.

One arrest has been made in connection to the first body discovered in July, and police are now offering a 400,000 rand reward for information leading to a breakthrough. Among the identified victims is Elizabeth Moselakgomo, a 38-year-old runner whose disappearance last week triggered a desperate search.

As South Africa continues to suffer from gender-based violence rates five times the global average, authorities are forced to issue basic warnings for women to avoid walking or running alone in isolated areas.

The Commission for Gender Equality has noted that the current environment has stripped women of their basic freedom of movement, underscoring the urgent need for the state to restore order and bring the perpetrators to justice.
