South African President Cyril Ramaphosa is digging in his heels, declaring he will not resign despite mounting pressure following a Constitutional Court ruling that cleared the path for impeachment proceedings. The controversy centers on the so-called Phala Phala scandal, where large sums of cash were stolen from his private game farm.

An independent panel previously found prima facie evidence suggesting the president may have committed serious misconduct in his handling of the incident.

While Ramaphosa insists the cash was the result of legitimate buffalo sales and denies any wrongdoing, the Constitutional Court has ruled that parliament must further examine the matter rather than dismiss it. Ramaphosa has now announced his intention to legally challenge the report, dismissing its findings as hearsay.

While political analysts suggest he may have the numbers to survive a parliamentary vote, the president is clearly attempting to avoid the reputational damage of a full-blown impeachment hearing. For now, the leader of South Africa remains in power, choosing a courtroom battle over an exit from office.
