The death toll from the capsizing of the MV Barima off the coast of Guyana has climbed to 41, as authorities uncover a disturbing pattern of misconduct and criminal behavior. Prime Minister Mark Phillips confirmed that the vessel was dangerously overcrowded, carrying 179 passengers despite an official registry of only 133.
The disaster, which occurred Saturday night, is now the subject of a criminal investigation. Public Works Minister Juan Edghill did not mince words, accusing the operators of attempting to 'cheat the system.' The situation is made even more egregious by the revelation that the captain and at least one crew member tested positive for cannabis.
Minister Edghill stated that the government maintains a zero-tolerance policy for such reckless behavior, and the captain and several crew members are now in police custody. While search-and-rescue efforts continue with the aid of the French army, the focus has shifted to holding those responsible for this catastrophe accountable.
Prime Minister Phillips has vowed that anyone found guilty of negligence or criminal wrongdoing will face the full force of the law.
