The regional security situation has taken a dangerous turn as Iranian-backed forces continue to project power through proxy attacks. Saudi Arabia was forced to close its critical 1,200km East-West pipeline—a key artery for global crude oil exports—after it was targeted by drones launched from Iraq.

While the Iraqi government has attempted to save face by removing a military commander in the Maysan province, the reality remains that their territory is being used as a staging ground for aggression against a sovereign neighbor. This incident is not an isolated event but part of a broader, coordinated campaign of destabilization.

Simultaneously, Houthi rebels in Yemen have seized control of the Red Sea coast, threatening vital maritime chokepoints and further tightening the grip on global energy supplies. As oil prices surge past $100 a barrel, the economic consequences for the West are becoming impossible to ignore.

While the Saudi government has opted for restraint for the moment, they have rightfully affirmed their absolute right to defend their sovereignty, security, and vital infrastructure. The Gulf Co-operation Council has correctly labeled this a flagrant violation of international law.

As the conflict stretches into its seventh month, the failure to decisively neutralize these Iranian-backed threats continues to impose a heavy tax on the global economy and threatens the stability of the entire Middle East.
