Justice has been served in a New York federal court, where Hadi Matar was convicted of providing material support to Hezbollah, the Lebanese terrorist organization.
Matar, who is already serving a 25-year state prison sentence for the attempted murder of Sir Salman Rushdie, now faces a potential life sentence for his role as a foot soldier for radical Islamic extremism.
Prosecutors successfully argued that Matar was not acting alone, but was instead driven by a long-standing fatwa issued by Iran’s leadership and a specific 2006 call to action from Hezbollah. The evidence presented, including videos made by the defendant and his own two-year plot, proved that this was a calculated act of transnational terrorism.
During the trial, Sir Salman Rushdie provided harrowing testimony about the 2022 attack, which left him partially blinded and suffering from 15 stab wounds. Despite the defense's pathetic attempt to blame the victim for his own writing, the jury rightly focused on the criminal actions of the man who sought to silence free speech through violence.
This conviction sends a clear message: those who act on behalf of foreign terror regimes to target individuals on American soil will face the full weight of the federal justice system.
