The reality of global conflict is hitting the bottom line of major carriers, with Ryanair reporting a sharp 34% decline in pre-tax profits to €593m for the April-June period.

As the United States and Israel continue to confront the Iranian regime, the resulting instability has sent global oil prices surging—with Brent crude recently topping $90 a barrel—directly impacting the cost of jet fuel.

While the airline attempted to mitigate these costs through fuel hedging, the portions of their supply not covered by these agreements have seen prices more than double. The instability has not only increased operational costs but has also dampened consumer confidence, forcing the airline to slash ticket prices by 6% to entice hesitant travelers.

With the Strait of Hormuz, a critical artery for global energy, facing significant disruption, the airline warned that its annual performance remains highly sensitive to the ongoing hostilities in the Middle East and Ukraine.

Despite a 6% increase in passenger numbers, the need to lower fares to maintain demand highlights the economic toll of geopolitical volatility. As the region remains in a state of flux, the airline industry faces a period of continued uncertainty, proving once again that global security and economic prosperity are inextricably linked.
