The Kremlin has tightened its grip on the political landscape, with a Moscow court ruling that Yabloko, the nation's only liberal, anti-war party, is prohibited from participating in next month's parliamentary elections.

The legal challenge was spearheaded by Rodina, a pro-Kremlin nationalist party, which accused Yabloko of supporting 'extremist' organizations due to its online content regarding the LGBT movement—a group designated as extremist by Russia's Supreme Court in 2023.

Additionally, the party faced accusations of copyright infringement and claims from Russia's financial monitoring service that it received foreign funding from Germany and the United States.

This move effectively removes the last vestige of organized political opposition from the ballot, as all other participating parties either support the war in Ukraine or refrain from criticizing it. The crackdown comes as the ruling United Russia party faces declining approval ratings amid economic instability and the ongoing conflict.

While the Central Electoral Commission had initially approved Yabloko’s candidate list, the government’s decision to block the party suggests a calculated effort to suppress growing dissent.

With independent election monitoring severely restricted and public protest effectively criminalized, the Kremlin continues to consolidate control, ensuring that the upcoming election will proceed without any meaningful challenge to its authority.
