Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has moved to replace Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov, a decision that has sparked protests in Kyiv and highlighted a bitter internal rift between the ministry and the nation's top military leadership.
The dismissal follows an admission from both Zelensky and Fedorov that the relationship between the defense ministry and Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi had become untenable.
Fedorov, who was appointed in January, claimed that his strategic initiatives were consistently blocked by the General Staff, leading to a public confrontation over the direction of the war effort.
While supporters of Fedorov—including some military personnel and civil society members—have taken to the streets to protest the change, Zelensky maintains that the dysfunction within the defense apparatus necessitated a shift in personnel.
The President has proposed Maj-Gen Yevhenii Khmara, the acting head of the Security Service, as a potential successor, citing his experience in technological combat operations.
As the administration navigates this leadership transition, the government is also reshuffling other key roles, including the appointment of state oil and gas boss Serhiy Koretsky as prime minister. Despite the unrest, the administration remains focused on resolving the systemic conflicts that have hampered operational efficiency during the ongoing conflict.
