Prime Minister Andy Burnham has signaled a firm continuation of British foreign policy, welcoming Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky as his first international guest at Downing Street.
During a meeting at a naval base in Portsmouth, Burnham assured the Ukrainian leader that the UK remains 'with Ukraine 100%' and committed to honoring all existing agreements.
The visit underscores the strategic alliance between the two nations, with Burnham promising to maintain pressure for a ceasefire that secures Ukraine's position at the negotiating table. Beyond diplomatic rhetoric, the UK is bolstering Ukraine's tactical capabilities by sharing the intellectual property for the 'Stone Cloak' electronic warfare system.
This technology, which allows for the mass production of drone-jamming devices, is already being integrated into the UK's future long-range weapons development, including the Project Brakestop cruise missile program.
The leaders also observed over 200 Ukrainian personnel participating in Exercise Sea Breeze, a maritime training operation focused on Black Sea warfighting and counter-mine measures.
Since the Russian invasion four years ago, Britain has committed £25 billion in support, a trajectory that Burnham appears determined to maintain despite the recent change in leadership.
While President Zelensky acknowledged the inherent uncertainty that comes with political transitions during wartime, he expressed confidence that the foundational relationship between the two nations remains stronger than ever.
