The butcher of Damascus and his inner circle face the gallows for decades of war crimes and state-sponsored murder.

Justice is finally catching up to the Assad dynasty. A Syrian court has handed down death sentences to ousted dictator Bashar al-Assad and his brother, Maher al-Assad, following convictions for war crimes and crimes against humanity.

The ruling marks a long-overdue reckoning for a regime that maintained a five-decade stranglehold on power through torture, murder, and the systematic slaughter of its own citizens. The trial also saw the sentencing of Atef Najib, the former head of political security in Deraa, who was present in court to hear his fate.

The court specifically cited the intentional killing of children and torture leading to death among the charges against the regime’s leadership. While the new Syrian government has successfully brought some officials to justice, the primary architects of the regime’s terror, including Bashar and Maher al-Assad, remain safely tucked away in Moscow.

The Assad brothers fled to Russia in December 2024 as the regime collapsed during an 11-day campaign led by current President Ahmed al-Sharaa.

For the families of the hundreds of thousands killed during the civil war, the verdict provides a measure of closure, though the challenge of securing extradition from their Russian protectors remains a significant hurdle.

This conviction serves as a clear message that the era of impunity for the Assad regime is over, even if the primary culprits are currently hiding from the consequences of their actions.
