Glen Hansard, the 56-year-old Irish musician known for his work with the rock band The Frames and his Oscar-winning contribution to the film Once, has died in a motorcycle accident. Emergency services were called to the scene on Lower Road in Lucan, west of Dublin, shortly before 4:30 a.m. local time following the single-vehicle crash.
Hansard, who first gained widespread recognition for his role as Outspan Foster in the 1991 film The Commitments, enjoyed a career spanning over three decades.
He achieved international acclaim in 2008 when he and Marketa Irglova won the Academy Award for Best Original Song for 'Falling Slowly.' Beyond his musical achievements, which included several solo albums and collaborations with high-profile artists, Hansard was known for his charitable efforts regarding homelessness in Dublin.
He is survived by his partner and his three-year-old son. Tributes have poured in from across the music industry, including from Bruce Springsteen, Ed Sheeran, and U2 frontman Bono, who acknowledged his significant impact on the Irish cultural landscape.
