President Bola Tinubu is taking decisive action to secure Nigeria, authorizing an 80% salary increase for junior soldiers to ensure the military has the morale and support required to crush Islamist militants and criminal kidnap gangs.

This marks the second pay raise in a single month, signaling a shift toward prioritizing the men and women on the front lines of the fight against terrorism and banditry. Under the new directive, the monthly wage for privates will climb to $132, with significant raises also applying to higher-ranking officers.

This massive investment, which pushes the military's annual wage bill from $484 million to $678 million, is a clear recognition that the nation's security is the top priority.

Beyond the pay increase, the administration is aggressively expanding the military's footprint by recruiting 28,000 additional soldiers and establishing four new army divisions, bringing the total to 12.

These reforms are essential to counter the persistent threats from Boko Haram, Islamic State West Africa Province, and violent criminal syndicates that have long destabilized the region.

While retired military leaders have noted that sustained funding and equipment upgrades—such as better rifles and gear—will be critical to long-term success, Tinubu’s commitment to modernizing the armed forces and prioritizing troop welfare is a necessary step toward restoring order and national sovereignty.
