The attempted hijacking of a Flydubai flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv was a calculated act of terror driven by Islamist radicalization, according to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
The attacker, an Omani national serving as a pilot, reportedly sought to down the aircraft, which plunged 17,000 feet before heroic passengers and crew intervened to subdue him. Netanyahu noted that the suspect’s background revealed clear Islamist tendencies and that the attacker was heard shouting for death after being restrained.
The incident, which forced an emergency landing in Saudi Arabia, has exposed a glaring security loophole that allowed a pilot from a nation without diplomatic ties to Israel to operate a flight into the country. Netanyahu confirmed that Israel is working closely with the Emirati government to close these gaps and ensure such a breach never happens again.
While investigations continue to determine if state actors like Iran played a role, President Trump has already issued a stern warning that any Iranian involvement would result in a severe response.
Meanwhile, the pilot who was stabbed during the struggle, Indian national Captain Smit Machchhar, is being hailed as a hero for his role in preventing a catastrophe. As Flydubai suspends its Tel Aviv routes, the focus remains on ensuring that national security and passenger safety are never again compromised by lax vetting or ideological blind spots.
